Government and Industry speakers presented big ideas about acquisition during DAU’s recent flagship event June 9, 2021, at Howell Auditorium, Fort Belvoir, VA. This was the third year DAU hosted such an event and more than 3,500 people attended virtually. This year’s event focused on “Platforms of the Future.”
DAU President Jim Woolsey introduced the concept of the platform of the future and how DAU continues to evolve into a modern learning platform that “connects people to people.” Speakers addressed the importance of establishing a modern acquisition system and workforce, with topics ranging from changing DoD’s requirements-focused acquisition process to a people and problem-centric approach to acquisition and how to best leverage the industrial base.
DAU Midwest Region Dean Travis Stewart served as the emcee for the event. He introduced the three segments focused on Powerful, Burning and Rising platforms. Stewart provided updates on the other learning activities, including the Big Idea Board and scavenger hunt that were happening simultaneously throughout the day. Following each segment, DAU Vice President Frank Kelley led Backstage with the Speakers sessions, prompting the speakers with questions to further the discussion. Kelley closed the event by stating that DAU promotes a “deliberate focus on the shared vision and mission across the entire acquisition workforce.”
The event delivered on its promise of a “day full of phenomenal speakers, guided discussions and interactive breakout sessions.” Videos of the talks are being added to the playlist as they become available and links to the Book Club sign-ups and Big Idea board are still available on the event webpage (.mil, .gov or .edu email address is required).
Participants could earn up to 8 Continuous Learning Points for attending and the event included additional learning opportunities off the main stage.
“We wanted [this event] to be a full and meaningful day,” Dr. Alicia Sanchez, DAU Director of Innovation, said.
The Big Idea Board was a digital counterpart to the physical Big Idea Board present during the first event two years ago.
The board “is an outlet to share ideas and be inspired by others,” Sanchez said. The Big Idea is available again for the workforce and will remain available as “DAU wants to understand what the workforce wants and needs from us, so let’s keep the conversation going.”
Attendees could also learn about the Speaker Book Club, where speakers and Kelley proposed books that may be of interest to attendees.
“These are books that shaped the speakers’ philosophy and focus,” Sanchez said, stating she hopes the book clubs are “meaningful and inspirational” for attendees. It is not too late to sign up for one of the book club events.
The event theme was Platforms of the Future and talks were centered on one of three areas:
