Is there any DFAR restriction on an IT sustainment contract for a 7-yr PoP (base plus 6 option years)? Any precedent that you are aware of on the IT side? Any barriers to such a scheme that you know of?

    Answer

Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) 17.204(e) says that unless otherwise approved in accordance with agency procedures, the total of the basic and the option periods shall not exceed 5 years in the case of services and supplies.  However, this limitation does not apply to information technology contracts.  Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement (DFARS) 217.204(e) says that, a task order or delivery order contracts (including contracts for information technology) awarded by DoD may be for any period up to 5 years and may be subsequently extended for one or more successive periods but shall not exceed 10 years unless an agency head determines exceptional circumstances requires a longer period.
