Aerospace Vehicle Designations

Bill Kobren

Was recently conducting a bit of research on the topic of aerospace vehicle designations. Probably old news to many of you, but I thought the results might be useful to some readers -- particularly those who may be called upon to submit a designation request, are involved in the process, or were simply just curious how system designation process works. A few potentially useful references include:

·         DoD Directive 4120.15E, Designating and Naming Military Aerospace Vehicles

·         DoD Directive 4120.15-L, Model Designation of Military Aerospace Vehicles

·         Joint Air Force Instruction 16-401, Army Regulation 70-50, and NAVAIRINST 13100.16 Designating and Naming Defense Military Aerospace Vehicles

·         MIL-HDBK-1812 Type Designation, Assignment and Method for Obtaining

·         DD Form 61 Request for Nomenclature
