Mr. Ken Carkhuff
Take a break and listen to the All Things Small Business podcast series. For episode 22, we visit with attorney, consultant, expert witness, and writer, Christoph Mlinarchik who says he is “all about small business”. He has served in government contracting officer roles, supported the DoD Office of Small Business Programs with policy and regulatory advice, served as legal counsel for a small business defense contractor, and now owns his own small business. He is also the author of a trio of books that simplify the contracting process by putting terms in plain English and by avoiding the use of legalese. The books have maintained a Five-Star rating on Amazon and are aimed at both government contracting insiders and potential new entrants. The three books are; Government, Contracts in Plain English, Federal Acquisition Regulation in Plain English, and Government Contracts Negotiation, Simplified!

This podcast is extremely informative and provide practical knowledge on help that is available to small businesses trying to navigate the cumbersome DoD acquisition process before and after contract award. He addresses several key mistakes that small business owners make to their own detriment and he answers his own question on whether or not the Federal Acquisition Regulation applies to federal contractors. If this piques your interest, you’ll have to listen to hear his answer. He also provides suggestions to help small businesses overcome some of their big challenges they face in the DoD marketspace.

Mr. Mlinarchik closes by providing three tips for small business owners that will help them perform as prime and subcontractors on DoD procurements. The tips are:
  • Get definite payment terms rather than the typical “paid when paid”
  • Expand your network of potential teaming partners
  • Pay attention to the FAR clauses and terms in your contract
