Digital Scans for Legacy Weapon Systems

While nearly all new DoD weapon systems are designed, developed, tested, and produced using digital principles, many of our legacy systems were not. Or if they were, the Government may not have taken delivery of the product definition data (e.g., 3D models and Logistics Product Data) or obtained appropriate license rights to them. An effective and efficient means of creating digital models after delivery is the use of three-dimensional scanning equipment using laser or Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technologies to create point-cloud or computer-aided design (CAD) models.

Once developed, models can be used for a wide range of Operations & Support (O&S) phase product support activities, such as:

  • Failure analysis and prediction
  • Modifications, redesign, and service life extensions
  • Maintenance planning and management updates
  • Obsolescence solutions
  • Virtual Reality (VR) Training
  • Remote sustaining engineering support for troubleshooting, battle damage assessment, and non-standard repairs
  • … and more!

Legacy system scans were planned or are underway for the following weapon systems:

  • Army – H-60
  • Navy – Surface Ships (including “Topside” scans and remotely operated vehicle underwater scans)
  • Air Force – F-16, B-1, T-38, F100 engine
