Don't Park in Front of Your Mailbox: Clearing the Path to Communication

Dr. Diane Bublak

My sister works for the USPS. We were discussing her mail delivery process when she stated one of the most irritating events is when someone parks in front of their mailbox, then complains that they didn’t receive their mail.

In this age of information overload and endless news alerts, we’re constantly bombarded with details, updates, and messages that demand our attention. It's like trying to reach your mailbox only to find someone’s parked their truck right in front of it. Our goals and ambitions are clear, but along the way, distractions can pile up, blocking our productivity, relationships, and sense of security. Professionally, we’re surrounded by technology and a swirl of communication—from personal to technical topics—that can often feel like we are wading through endless spam.

So, what’s in your “garbage can” that hinders effective communication? While dumpster diving might yield an unexpected treasure every once in a while, (or that retainer you lost in high school), sifting through trash generally isn’t productive. Our mental clutter is much the same: it’s littered with distractions that don’t do us any good. What’s blocking your “mailbox” today, and how can you clear the path for fresh ideas and effective connections?

Here are 10 common blockades that could be clogging your communication channels, along with ways to kick them to the curb:

  1. Overthinking – Getting too caught up in “what ifs” can bog down your message and your clarity. Sometimes it’s best to say it simply and directly.
  2. Negative Self-Talk – Doubting your ideas before they even see the light of day can halt creativity. Silence the inner critic to communicate with confidence.
  3. Information Overload – When everything is coming at you all at once, it’s easy to lose track of what really matters. Streamline by focusing on the most relevant information.
  4. Fear of Judgment – Worrying about how others might react to your ideas can stifle expression. Remember that constructive criticism can help you grow.
  5. Perfectionism – If you’re waiting for your message to be “perfect,” it may never leave the draft stage. Aim for clear, concise, and engaging over flawless.
  6. Digital Distractions – Phone notifications, endless emails, and pings from every direction pull us away from focusing. Limit your distractions by setting boundaries for screen time.
  7. Poor Time Management – Rushing through a message or spending too little time on it can lead to misunderstandings. Schedule time for reflection and response.
  8. Ego – When the need to be right overshadows the need to communicate effectively, it creates a roadblock. Listen actively and stay open to other perspectives.
  9. Ambiguity – Vague language creates misunderstandings and leaves others guessing your intentions. Be as clear as you can with your message.
  10. Resistance to Feedback – Ignoring helpful critiques makes growth difficult. Welcome feedback as a tool to refine and improve your communication skills.

Learning how to clear the communication clutter can be a game-changer, and there are tons of resources to help. DAU students across the DoD can register for courses and access supplemental resources from our commercial partners at no additional cost. By exploring these learning opportunities, you can park that clutter somewhere far away from your mailbox and communicate with clarity, purpose, and creativity. So, let’s keep our mailboxes clear and our paths open—no parking allowed!
