Earning and Tracking of Continuous Learning Points

Earning and Tracking of Continuous Learning Points
Bill Kobren

As a follow-up to my April LOG Blog post entitled “Getting Those 80 Continuous Learning Points (CLP)”, wanted to share some additional insights in response to one of the frequently asked questions I hear from our defense acquisition workforce colleagues -- namely the earning and tracking of CLPs. Summarizing a few salient points from the continuous learning site:

  • DoD continuous learning policy applies to DoD acquisition workforce members, and is outlined in DoD Instruction 5000.66. Additional details are available in handy Policy and Guidance site in our Continuous Learning Center. Keep in mind this policy specifically applies to members of the defense acquisition workforce.
  • A list of recommended point credits and creditable activities is readily available in our continuous learning center.
  • From a training perspective, DAU continuous learning modules and training courses have continuous learning points (CLPs) assigned to them. You can view the CLP value on the course concept card in our DAU iCatalog. When Defense Acquisition Workforce members complete a DAU CLM or training, the CLPs assigned to the course will automatically flow from DAU to the members CLP tracking system. For other DAU-sponsored activities, DAU may assign a CLP value to the activity, however the workforce member must enter the points manually into their respective point tracking system.
  • Awarding of continuous learning points (CLPs) can also be determined by a non-DAU event sponsoring activity based on the recommended Continuous Learning Point Award table, which describes the guidelines for determining CLPs. Note these are only guidelines. The supervisor, in conjunction with the defense acquisition workforce member, should use these guidelines to determine points credited for any given training or developmental activity that has not been predetermined by the sponsoring activity. DAU does not approve points requested or awarded.

Finally, to assist sponsoring activities, additional information to is available at Sponsoring CL Activities, Assigning Points and Point Relationships. Keep in mind for non-DAU sponsored activities that the workforce member enters their point request manually into their respective Service or Agency point tracking system for their supervisor’s approval. These tracking systems are available at the respective Department of the Air Force, Department of the Army or 4th Estate Director of Acquisition Career Management (DACM) or the Department of the Navy’s Director of Acquisition Talent Management (DATM) websites.
