New Defense Standardization Program Policy
Bill Kobren
The department has issued a new DoDI 4120.24 Defense Standardization Program of interest to the life cycle logistics, product support and program management, sustainment, systems engineering, Diminishing Manufacturing Sources and Material Shortages, parts and material management communities. This newly updated policy reminds us that DoD policy for this important multi-disciplinary arena includes:
  • “Maintain a single, integrated DSP to promote standardization of materiel, information technology, facilities, and engineering practices…
  • Preference for the use of non-government standards to the maximum practicable extent instead of developing and maintaining government specifications and standards…
  • Develop, maintain, and implement DoD specifications, standards, and other related defense standardization documents in accordance with DoD Manual (DoDM) 4120.24.”

For those who may not be familiar with the Defense Standardization Program (DSP) and the the Defense Standardization Program Office (DSPO), encourge you to visit their DSP website to get a sense of the scope of the wide range of programs, specifications and standards, resources, and publications including the DSP Journal that are readily available.
