New DoD Human Systems Integration (HSI) Policy

Bill Kobren
The Department has issued an important new multi-disciplinary policy entitled DoDI 5000.95 Human Systems Integration in Defense Acquisition, which requires the DoD to “…utilize HSI in defense acquisition to provide a disciplined, unified, and interactive approach to integrate human considerations across system design to optimize total system performance and minimize life-cycle costs.”

In addition to outlining applicability and responsibilities, this new policy also addresses HSI planning and procedures, including application across the following domains: Human Factors Engineering (HFE), Personnel, Habitability, Manpower, Training, Safety and Occupational Health (SOH), and Force Protection and Survivability (FP&S). Given that these domains and this topic touches a range of integrated product support (IPS) elements and life cycle logistics competency area, highly recommend (re-) familiarizing yourselves with the content of this important newly updated DoD policy, as well as a recent DAU LOG Blog Post on this subject entitled “DAU Human Systems Integration (HSI) Resources”.
