A Real R2D2 To Fix Satellites In Space?
Steve Skotte
For years, space system acquirers and operators have dreamt about robots in space capable of repairing satellites. You see, unlike most of our weapon systems, once our space systems are launched into orbit, there is very little we can do to fix hardware problems. We can still update software and switch from the primary component's side to the redundant side--if we've designed in redundancy--but we haven't been able to repair or refuel (except in rare cases like when astronauts repaired the Hubble Telescope). Enter real R2D2 robots!! See this Business Insider article about Rogue Space Systems plans to launch robots and what their capabilities will be.
