Transforming Workforce Professional Development

Bill Kobren
Was intrigued by a recent article I read entitled “Why Your Traditional Approach to Learning and Development Won’t Cut It in the 2020s” According to the article, six major considerations:
  1. Some learning and development teams lack L&D expertise and real-world credibility.
  2. The training offered is not what is needed.
  3. Learning and development becomes a mandatory to-do.
  4. The focus is on training events, not a learning culture.
  5. The top of the organization has stopped learning.
  6. The training overlooks the biological realities of learning and retention.”

Encourage you to give it a read. It’s interesting, informative, and insightful. It also reminded me that your teammates at DAU are not standing still as the workforce professional development is rapidly evolving. In fact, DAU is in the midst of a significant transformation journey that is or will be tackling many of these areas head-on, including:

  • Tailored mission assist workshops
  • Increased use of multi-disciplinary intact team training
  • DAU faculty embeds in various program offices
  • Significant increase in the number of easily accessible, high impact, short duration videos
  • Easily accessible, mobile-friendly suites of key product support and intellectual property-focused guidebooks
  • Migration of our highly regarded DAU library to an easily accessible online knowledge repository
  • Virtual instructor-led training (VILT) courses
  • DAU Mobile App with immediate access to myriad of resources on your mobile phone or tablet
  • Text to Speech conversion functionality of online resources
  • Comprehensive ACQuipedia repository that includes nearly 150 life cycle logistics articles alone
  • Robust and timely dissemination of information via blogs and social media
  • Powerful Examples of Program Success videos and podcasts
  • Launch of regular TEDxDAU sessions
  • Short-duration, high impact, weekly DAU webcasts
  • Robust new interactive Adaptive Acquisition Framework (AAF) site, aligned with emerging DoD acquisition policy and a range of DAU learning assets
  • The new DAU Credentialing initiative
  • Deployment of a new Cornerstone on Demand (CSOD) learning management system (LMS)
  • Nearly 50 web-based communities of practice including seven under the life cycle logistics umbrella (logistics, DMSMS, additive manufacturing, public-private partnering, and performance based logistics, with two more in development: corrosion prevention & control and the defense standardization program)
  • Shorter duration online training (OLT) learning assets, including significant streamlining and shortening the duration of courses in our OLT portfolio by eliminating redundancy, linking to workflow learning resources, repurposing content to workflow learning assets. With seven of our logistics OLT courses under ten hours in duration and student contact time reduced from 168 to 52 hours, net effect has been a 70% reduction in contact time for students taking all seven courses, increased currency and without loss of course fidelity.
  • And the list goes on. Watch this blog for information on emerging new technologies, initiatives and resources designed to enhance workforce professional development and improve acquisition outcomes – all in a rapidly evolving, ever-changing environment.
