Yesterday I highlighted the SD-2 in a post entitled "Commercial Items and Non-Developmental Items". As a public service, permit me to introduce you to the wide-range of other impactful Standardization Documents (SD) guidebooks available from the Defense Standardization Program Office (DSPO), part of the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research & Engineering staff. These documents are readily accessible from the “Guidance” link under the “Policy and Guidance” tab of the DSPO website, and include:
  • SD-1 Standardization Directory
  • SD-2 DoD Acquisition Buying Commercial Items and Non-Developmental Items
  • SD-5 Market Research
  • SD-6 Provision Governing Qualification
  • SD-9 DoD Guidance on Participating in the Development and Use of Non-Government Standards
  • SD-10 Identification & Development of Metric Standards
  • SD-15 Guide for Performance Specifications
  • SD-18 Program Guide for Parts Requirements
  • SD-19 Parts Management Guide
  • SD-21 Mandated Specifications and Standards
  • SD-22 Diminishing Manufacturing Sources and Material Shortages (DMSMS)
  • SD-23 DoD Item Reduction Program
  • SD-24 Value Engineering

As a side note, DAU offers learning assets and related resources on a range of these topics including DMSMS, parts management, commercial items, market research, and value engineering to name a few. In fact DMSMS is so vitally important an issue that we maintain a copy of it in our Integrated Product Support Guidebook Suite.
