The goals of this program were to use a low temperature surface hardening technology, initially termed Low Temperature Colossal Super-Saturation (LTCSS) and now commonly referred to as Interstitial Hardening (IH), to improve the galling and crevice corrosion of 316L stainless steels and to offer an alternative to Grade 2 steel and Monel fasteners.
