How often have you used brainstorming to solve a problem? Chances are, you've used it at least once, even if you didn't realize it.  For decades, people have used brainstorming to generate ideas, and to come up with creative solutions to problems. However, you need to use brainstorming correctly for it to be fully effective.  In this article, we'll look at brainstorming: what it is, why it's useful, and how to get the best from it.

If you're not getting enough good quality ideas, try using the approaches below to increase the number of ideas that you generate:

  • The Stepladder Technique – introduce one person at a time; good for quiet types.
  • Brainwriting –all individuals to generate and develop written ideas.
  • Brain-netting – An electronic method often cloud based.
  • Crawford's Slip Writing Approach – classic notes on the wall approach.

These techniques help you in specific brainstorming situations:

  • Reverse Brainstorming –improve a product or service.
  • Starbursting –develop questions to evaluate a proposal.
  • Charette Procedure –large groups of people
  • Round-Robin Brainstorming – avoid influence of other people.
  • Rolestorming –take on other people's identities while brainstorming; reduce inhibitions.

Ask yourself and answer these questions to determine if you are ready to make a change, or ready to become an innovator. Often as innovators we are not always aware of when it's time to change, what to change, if to change, or how to change. Here are some Facilitative Questions that will help you determine how to make sense of any issues around change that you have been pondering.

Nudge theory is a flexible and modern concept for:

  • understanding of how people think, make decisions, and behave,
  • helping people improve their thinking and decisions,
  • managing change of all sorts, and
  • identifying and modifying existing unhelpful influences on people.

Nudge theory was named and popularized by the 2008 book, 'Nudge: Improving Decisions About Health, Wealth, and Happiness', written by American academics Richard H Thaler and Cass R Sunstein. The book is based strongly on the Nobel prize-winning work of the Israeli-American psychologists Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky.
