An article in the September - October issue of Defense Acquisition Magazine by James Davis tries to answer the question, ...did you ever wonder what happens to all of those spare parts that we bought to support the weapon system?"  It is true that sometimes "perfectly good spare parts are wasted when a weapon system is retired. Working this waste into total ownership costs would render more visible the full costs of sundowning.”  Click on the link to read more,

So you are a PM and have learned that your program will be, or already has been, cancelled.   As a proactive PM, you know you need to develop a course of action that has not have been addressed in any program plan.  The plan going forward will address the staffing, intellectual property, hardware, software, data archiving and many other issues now facing the program shutdown.    You have arrived at this community looking for assistance and answers.

We have collected information from leaders, subject matter experts and other programs in areas of Personnel, Capabilities/Requirements, Technology, Facilities/HW/SW, Contracts and Budgets.

We hope you find the information here helpful.

What did we miss?  What other aspects did you find to be important, and should not be overlooked, that we can address in this community?

In today's fiscally constrained environment, it may be necessary to terminate unaffordable programs.  Terminating programs is a very complex process and should be executed with the same attentiveness and structure employed in active programs to ensure the government's best interests are protected.
