    Description:

To design better systems we must understand evolution. Evolution is the phenomenon of change after change in a discernible direction in time. It is everywhere, and unites all of nature and science: bio and non-bio, human made and not human made. The lecture shows how to predict evolution from the physics covered by the Constructal Law: because of freedom, all movement (flow) exhibits the tendency to evolve into configurations that provide greater access.

Predicted design phenomena include animal locomotion, airplanes, helicopters, organ size, body size, economies of scale, sustainability, population size, hierarchy, and the S-curve history of the spreading of everything that flows on an area or volume. The doctrine of evolutionary (constructal) design teaches how to predict evolution in general, and how to fast-forward technology evolution. To predict is ‘theory’, the ability to imagine, to see with the eyes of the mind, to have original ideas before testing them against observations of nature. To predict is the opposite of empiricism such as copying what exists (biomimicry, technology theft, reverse engineering, plagiarism).

    Host:

    Adrian Petrescu, Visiting Professor, DAU

Adrian S. Petrescu, DAU's Visiting Professor extending the invite, was Senior Adviser, Senate of Romania, 1991-1995, served as NATO PA Researcher from 1992, as Secretary of Delegation to NATO PA from July 1991, contributed to the drafting of the Constitution of Romania passed by referendum in December 1991; holds a Ph.D. from GSPIA at University of Pittsburgh (2003) and taught in and led graduate programs in U.S. for a quarter century. Dr. Petrescu researched cybersecurity and international security since 1991, and adopting the constructal law since 2016.

    Speaker:

Adrian Bejan--Guest Speaker--, J.A. Jones Distinguished Professor, Duke University

Adrian Bejan received the Benjamin Franklin Medal (2018) for "his pioneering interdisciplinary contributions in thermodynamics and convection heat transfer that have improved the performance of engineering systems, and for constructal theory, which predicts natural design and its evolution in engineering, scientific, and social systems." His degrees are from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (B.S.1971, M.S.1972, Ph.D.1975). He has 700 peer-refereed journal articles, 30 books, 87,000 citations, h = 108 and 18 honorary doctorates from universities in 11 countries.
