    Learn about the innovative approach the Program Executive Office, Assembled Chemical Weapons Alternatives (PEO-ACWA) used to complete their critical project under budget and ahead of schedule.     Series Description: 

    A series looking at government, private industry, and investor perspectives on how innovation happens and how it makes a difference. This series will give you insights on what others have done and how you can apply what they have done in your environment. Hear what works, what doesn’t, and lessons learned along the way. Hear from organizations such as the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), industry vendors, tech-transfer offices, and investors in what they look for and how they make things work.

    Program Executive Officer, PEO ACWA

    Michael S. Abaie is the Program Executive Officer for the Program Executive Office, Assembled Chemical Weapons Alternatives (PEO ACWA), which is headquartered at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland.  
     

    Mr. Abaie assumed the role of PEO in September 2018 and is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the program, including operations at the Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant in Colorado, the Blue Grass Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant in Kentucky and PEO ACWA’s Anniston Field Office in Alabama. He is a member of the Senior Executive Service.

    Site Program Manager, PEO ACWA

    Timothy K. Garrett, an Alabama native, is the Anniston Field Office Site Project Manager for the Program Executive Office, Assembled Chemical Weapons Alternatives (PEO ACWA). He provides oversight of Static Detonation Chamber operations to ensure the contractor meets and maintains Army, State, and Federal safety and security standards and environmental laws, regulations, and permit conditions. He also provides contractor performance evaluations to Headquarters as required. Mr. Garrett is charged with effectively implementing PEO ACWA’s strategic goals and providing chemical agent munitions and agent destruction managerial, and technical support to the chemical munitions storage sites in Colorado and Kentucky.

    Gregory St. Pierre serves as the Director of the PEO ACWA Compliance Directorate since 2012.  As the Director of Compliance he is responsible for providing oversight, implementation, and compliance with Safety, Security, Surety, Cybersecurity, Treaty, Environmental, Occupational Health, and Air Monitoring programs supporting the PEO ACWA mission. 

    Prior to joining PEO ACWA, Mr. St. Pierre served in a similar role as the Director for the Chemical Materials Agency Risk Management Directorate.  Mr. St. Pierre has been involved in the United States chemical demilitarization mission since 1987, supporting all the phases of the program's lifecycle, and supporting chemical agent programs for 40-plus years as a Department of the Army Civilian.

    Moderator, Visiting Faculty Member, DAU

    George Vukotich, Ph.D. is a visiting faculty member at DAU focusing on innovation and approaches organizations can take to be more successful. In addition to his work at the Defense Acquisition University, he helps organizations and universities set up tech and innovation hubs. His prior experience includes helping the City of Chicago build 1871 which has become ranked as the #1 tech hub in the world and the University of Wisconsin add a Smart Cities and Innovation hub. He is a startup advisor and angel investor. His educational work includes being a faculty member, department chair, and dean of a college of business. He has spent time in Corporate America with organizations such as Accenture and IBM with a focus on creating the future and what it takes for organizations to get there. He is an author and has served in the U.S. military.
