    Description:
    Come join Dr. Daniel Gillespie, Lead Project Director for F-16 avionics software development, 309th Software Engineering Group, as he provides insight on the ongoing transition from waterfall to Agile production methodologies for an organic, large scale development program. Derived benefits, pitfalls, and lessons learned will be presented and discussed. There will be an opportunity for Q&A.

    In 2019, Dr. Will Roper, Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics, challenged the F-16 team to install and run Kubernetes, a key open-source platform for managing containerized workloads and services in DevSecOps, on an F-16 in 45 days. The 309th Software Engineering Group successfully conducted a proof-of-concept demonstration in front of Dr. Roper and Nicolas M. Chaillan, Air Force Chief Software Officer, in December 2019 and continue to explore the next level of integration. Needless to say, the future of the F-16 is as exciting as ever. It continues to push boundaries and change what it means to be a modern fighter, now through software development and deployment.


    Dr. Daniel M. Gillespie served for 25 years as an Air Force officer, retiring in the rank of Colonel. While on active duty he served as a pilot in over 12 different aircraft, but primarily in the KC-135 and C-21, logging over 3000 flight hours, including numerous combat and combat support missions. In addition to flying, he was an acquisition engineer for various weapons programs, and served on the faculty of the US Air Force Academy and the NATO Defense College. After retiring from the Air Force, Dr. Gillespie became a DoD Civilian Project Director for F-16 software development, and currently serves as the Lead Project Director for avionics software development for the Post Block USAF, Air National Guard, and European F-16 fleets. Dr. Gillespie has a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the US Air Force Academy, a Master of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder, and a PhD in Engineering Systems from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He and his wife of over 30 years have six children.
