    Description:  The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs are the nation's largest source of early-stage research and development funding for small businesses. These programs provide more than $4 billion annually in competitive awards, enabling entrepreneurs to develop new technologies and ultimately facilitate the commercialization of innovation. Webinar Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from Ms. Gina Sims, Director of the Defense SBIR/STTR Program Office, and understand the role that DoD plays in delivering cutting edge technology to the Warfighter.

    Ms. Gina Sims

    Ms. Regina “Gina” Sims is the Director of the Defense SBIR/STTR Program Office for the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering. Ms. Sims is the principal point of contact for Congress, the Small Business Administration, Government Accountability Office, and Interagency SBIR/STTR Community Representatives. Ms. Sims oversees and leads the SBIR/STTR Program to unify and convey transparency and trust across Defense agencies and components encompassing the program.

    Ms. Sims has been a DoD Civilian for 15 years, serving in several different acquisition program management roles within the DAF. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her two children and is an avid reader. She has an affinity for mentoring and coaching, dedicating time fostering creative thought and developing the next generation of civilian leaders.

    Ken Carkhuff

    Mr. Ken Carkhuff

    Mr. Carkhuff is responsible for leading the life cycle activities of assigned Small Business Professional (SBP) learning assets.  He also serves as a professor for all instructor-led SBP courses.  He was the first DoD acquisition professional to earn the new DoD Small Business Professional Credential in May 2021.
     

    He is a retired naval officer and former SH-60B helicopter pilot with over 2500 flight hours.  He is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy (BS, Physical Science), the Naval War College (MA, National Security and Strategic Studies), the Naval Postgraduate School (MS, Contract Management) and Liberty University (EdS, Educational Leadership).  He is a member of the Defense Acquisition Corps.
