    Description:
    Is innovation encouraged at your workplace?  Are you looking for ways to jumpstart an innovation culture that delivers results?  

    This unique event will bring together scholars, senior leaders, and entrepreneurs for an open discussion on how we can improve innovation through diversity.  

    Please join world-renowned author Frans Johansson, author of The Medici Effect, as he moderates a Fireside chat on these topics with RDML Seiko Okano, Program Executive Officer for Integrated Warfare Systems, Maximilien Reele, the Air Force Lead with the Defense Innovation Unit, and Purvi Desai, a digital service expert that has extensive experience driving digital transformation.

    The Leading Acquisition Series:
    Developed by the DAU Leadership Learning Center, this series, on the first Wednesday of each month, will help you grow as a Defense Acquisition leader.  Building team success; working effectively through others; or spanning team, functional, and organizational boundaries—all will be covered. DAU's faculty share the latest thinking on what it means to lead in this environment using practical Defense Acquisition examples along with suggestions on how to apply what you learn on the job. Time in each session is set aside to answer questions.

    Moderator: Frans Johansson

    Author and CEO of The Medici Group

    Frans Johansson’s ideas around leadership, success, innovation, and diversity have inspired readers and audiences worldwide; while his practical insights have empowered thousands to take action. In his role as thought leader and CEO of The Medici Group, Frans has advised Fortune 500 companies such as American Express and IBM and worked with executive committees at the world's largest companies.

    Raised in Sweden by his African-American/Cherokee mother and Swedish father, Frans has lived all his life at the intersection. He has founded a software company, an international healthcare firm, and a hedge fund. Frans has also been featured on ABC, CNN, CNBC, the PBS Newshour, and National Public Radio. He currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the New York Hall of Science. Frans holds a B.S. in Environmental Science from Brown University and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.

    Speaker: Rear Admiral Seiko Okano

    Program Executive Officer for Integrated Warfare Systems

    Rear Adm. Okano is a native of Evanston, Illinois. She is a 1994 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering. She earned a Master of Science in Space Systems Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School, where she was also selected for transfer to the engineering duty officer community.

    Okano’s operational tours include gunnery and fire control officer, and electrical division officer on USS Belleau Wood (LHA-3) which she deployed to Somalia; and Amphibious Force 7th Fleet flag aide in Okinawa, Japan. During Operation Iraqi Freedom she served on Joint Crew Composite Squadron One in Tikrit, Iraq to assist with defeating radio-controlled improvised explosive devices.

    Okano’s decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and various other individual, and unit campaign and service awards.

    Speaker: Lieutenant Colonel Max Reele

    Air Force Lead at Defense Innovation Unit (DIU)

    Lieutenant Colonel Maximilien (Max) H. Reele is a graduated Materiel Leader with extensive emerging technology, acquisitions and digital transformation experience. He is currently the USAF Lead at Defense Innovation Unit where he strives to solve DOD capability gaps with non-traditional tech solutions from the commercial sector; focusing most of his efforts on architectural considerations for the DepSecDef's priority Replicator project.

    He has served as a weapons and tactics analyst, space & cyber system technology manager, segment lead for the Geosynchronous Space Situational Awareness Program (GSSAP) and as the Product Owner for Kessel Run’s original cloud-architecture and scaling. He has also served in the Pentagon on the Assistant Secretary for Acquisition Staff for a variety of space technology portfolios. He was a founder and Chief of Delivery for the Business and Enterprise System Product Innovation (BESPIN) organization and software lab and most recently a Materiel Leader at Kessel Run.

    Lt Col Reele has deployment experience as a precision guided munitions expert and government technical product evaluator in Southwest Asia in Operations IRAQI FREEDOM and ENDURING FREEDOM.

    Speaker: Purvi Desai

    Digital Services Expert for the United States Digital Service

    Purvi Desai is a digital service expert that has extensive experience driving digital transformation, innovation and product and program management within the federal government. She is currently serving at the United States Digital Service within the Executive Office of the President. In this role, she is working with the CDC and its modernization efforts surrounding disease surveillance. She has served as the Chief of the All Domain Common Platform at Kessel Run, where she was responsible for building and maintaining the platform that supports mission applications for Air Operations Centers across the globe. As a defense contractor she has also worked to develop growth and learning programs at BESPIN, an Air Force software organization focused on mobile software development. She has consulted with the Innovatrium to develop innovation programs within the Air Force such as Project Mercury. Her experience extends to the USAF and the USAF Reserves where she has worked across a wide breadth of organizations. From managing large program budgets in the Pentagon, serving as the US delegate for a NATO standardization group, planning special operations during the 2018 Winter Olympics, and deployment experience during Operation IRAQI FREEDOM and ENDURING FREEDOM.
