Description: Zero Trust (ZT) is the foundation of a DoD security transformation to counter major cybersecurity threats. The DoD has a series of core reference architectures to include the DoD's Cybersecurity Reference Architecture (CS RA) and the DoD Zero Trust Reference Architecture (ZTRA). The DoD CIO released Version 5 of the Cybersecurity Reference Architecture (CS RA) in February 2023. The purpose of CS RA Version 5 is to establish characteristics for cybersecurity architecture in the form of principles, fundamental components, capabilities, and design patterns to address threats that exist both inside and outside traditional network boundaries. CS RA Version 5 advances DoD's defense business systems, national security systems, and critical infrastructure / key resources through an evolution to integrate ZT principles. CS RA Version 5 provides the architecture framework for modernizing cybersecurity for DoD and support completion of the Target level for ZTA. As DoD program offices go forward with their ZT implementations, there is a need to harmonize core security engineering concepts of the CS RA with their ZT pillars and capabilities. Biography: Mr. Bornschein currently serves as Director for Cybersecurity Architecture for the Deputy DOD CIO for Cybersecurity. He has served thirty four years in various capacities in industry, active duty, reserve forces, and government service. Twenty three (23) years of this experience is in classified IT systems management and cybersecurity supporting: Marine Corps Acquisitions for Combat Operations Centers, Marine Corps tactical C2 collaboration suite production to IRQ/AFG, IndoPac NMCI Transition.
