Description: Zero Trust (ZT) potentially transforms DoD Cybersecurity. ZT is a cybersecurity strategy wherein security policy is applied based on context established through least-privileged access controls and strict user authentication—not assumed trust. Zero Trust Security Control Overlay will provide standardized expectations on how to implement ZT across the Department and associate security controls with zero trust activities and outcomes.

Mr. Will Schmitt serves as the Portfolio and Risk Management Lead for the Department of Defense (DoD) Zero Trust Portfolio Management Office (ZT PfMO). His is responsible for ZT cybersecurity matters related to enterprise wide ZT portfolio risk management, including coordination of activities within the ZT PfMO and across the DoD and with stakeholders in the ZT ecosystem to further the Department’s Zero Trust portfolio priorities. He manages key portfolio governance and risk planning functions of the ZT PfMO: managing DoD ZT policies and compliance; overseeing DoD ZT portfolio performance to include metrics and measures; and managing DoD ZT portfolio risks and vulnerabilities. The mission of the DoD ZT PfMO is to accelerate Zero Trust adoption to prevent lateral movement of adversaries by FY27.
