As experienced life cycle logisticians know, success in this business of ours requires an interdisciplinary breadth and depth in knowledge and experience across the not only the system life cycle, but across multiple functional domains. Perhaps nowhere is this more clearly illustrated than the intersection of logistics, product support, and systems engineering. DoD has long recognized – and articulated via both the Integrated Product Support (IPS) Elements, as well as the life cycle logistics competencies -- the critical technical skills a successful life cycle logistician requires.
These include (but are certainly not limited to) areas such as designing for supportability, reliability, availability and maintainability (RAM), configuration management, technical data management, supportability analysis, and risk management, among others. DoD has also long recognized the importance of our workforce – and tasked DAU to provide training on these topics. Many technically focused learning assets (including training courses, continuous learning modules, workflow learning resources) have deployed or undergone major updates in the last few years, so many life cycle logisticians may not have had the opportunity to receive the most current training available.
