Emergency preparedness is an essential skill at all times and at all places, and at DAU, it is no exception. While we do not expect every emergency to occur, it is always best to be prepared for when it does happen.
Fire:
If the fire alarm sounds or you are directed by an authorized announcement to do so
- Evacuate the building using the designated emergency exit routes. However, be prepared to also use alternate routes.
- Move others in an orderly fashion to the designated evacuation site at a minimum of 50 feet from the building. Don't forget your accountability checklist.
- When you reach the designated area, take roll call and report any missing or injured staff to the appropriate authorities.
- Always follow the directions of the supervisor in charge or the public safety officials.
If caught in a burning building:
If your clothes catch on fire, stop, drop and roll until the fire is extinguished.
- if you're escaping through a closed door, check for heat before opening. Use the back of your hand to feel the top of the door, the doorknob, and the crack between the door and doorframe. If it's too hot, do not open it. Escape through a window and if you cannot, hang a white or light colored material outside the window to alert firefighters.
- Crawl low under any smoke to your exit.
- When you are safely out, call the emergency number and do not go back inside a burning building.
Evacuations:
In the event your building is evacuated for any emergency (e.g., bomb threats, large-scale natural disaster, chemical spills inside the building, etc.), follow these steps to be prepared:
- Move visitors and staff a minimum of 300 feet from the buiding.
- If you must evacuate to an off-site location, maintain control of staff and follow directions provided by the supervisor in charge or public safety officials.
- Cell phone is strictly prohibited during a bomb threat. Cell phone use could detonate a potential bomb.
- Above all, do not panic. Remain calm and follow directions.
Lockdown:
If a lockdown has been announced in your building, follow these directions:
- Summon staff to move inside the building for the lockdown.
- Close and lock all outside access doors and windows.
- Follow the shelter-in-place procedures if a hazardous chemical event is suspected.
- Take record and roll call of all staff and visitors.
- Do not use cell phones. Airwaves must remain free for emergency situations.
- Remain calm and wait for the all-clear.
Suspicious Persons:
If you feel you are facing a suspicious person or activity for any reason, follow these steps:
- Politely ask if you can assist with anything. Always be civil and courteous until you are sure that the individual shows suspicious signs.
- If the person is uncooperative or unapproachable, contact a higher level authority.
- Report any suspicious or criminal activity to the higher level authorities and/or law enforcement immediately. Do not attempt to disarm or engage the suspicious person.
- Note who and what you see and hear both directly or indirectly, including suspicious key words and clues. There is a possiblity that the suspicious person may not be alone in whatever he/she may be doing, and pay attention to these details to help expose a threat to authorities.
- If the person asks about private or classified information, do not provide that information. Politely change the subject or claim that you don't know or can neither confirm nor deny such information. Revealing private or classified information can also get you in trouble with the law.
- Provide higher authorities and/or law enforcement the full information you have gathered and help in the inquiry within their allowance. Know the Fort Belvoir Police phone number: 806-3104/5/6/7
Tornado:
When a Tornado Warning has been issued:
- Listen to or watch bulletins on the radio, TV, Internet, or smarthpone. A tornado watch indicates that the storm is capable of producing a tornado. A tornado warning indicates that Doppler radar or expert storm chasers have sighted a hook echo or funnel cloud.
- If either a tornado warning has been issued or a tornado has been sighted, go to the basement or an inside hallway at the lowest level of the building. Avoid places with side-span roofs such as auditoriums, cafeterias, and large hallways.
- Get under a steady piece of furniture and use your arms to protect your head and neck.
- If you are driving during a tornado, get out of your car and crouch in the nearest ditch.
- When the tornado has passed, check to ensure everyone is okay. Report any injuries.
- Wait for an all clear before leaving the building.
