The velocity, volume and complexity of change thrust upon us requires that we never stop learning. Nowadays, learning can take place anywhere, anytime, from you cell phone or in your car. At DAU, you can learn by viewing
learning videos, interacting with
DAU Alexa, using the
DAU App, attending a
DAU online course,
earning a DAU credential, or participating in a
DAU Webcast among others.
One of the DAU Webcast series that we have been curating as a platform to delve into topics central to the National Defense Strategy and high on Secretary Esper's and Undersecretary Lord's goals is the Think Differently Series. As your curator and host, I keep listening to what you the workforce is talking about, grappling with or inspired by to curate upcoming episodes.
The most recent episode of "Think Differently" titled "Leaders Never Stop Learning" was inspired by three elements: your numerous posts on LinkedIn on the books and reading lists that are inspiring you, our commitment to life-long learning, and a quote from Secretary Mattis' latest book "Call Sign Chaos" that says:
" If you haven't read hundreds of books, learning from others who went before you, you are functionally illiterate- you can’t coach and you can't lead."
To unpack the topic "Leaders Never Stop Learning" we invited three DoD thought leaders who actively read and write, to share their experiences, what inspires them to enhance our broader learning experiences, and why learning is so critical: for the Navy, John Laney creator of
DoDreads.com; from the Army, Ryan Evans CEO of
WarOntheRocks.com and from the Air Force, newly minted author of
"T-Minus AI" and TEDxDAU 2019 speaker, Capt. Michael Kanaan. Host of this "Think Differently" episode was none other than DAU Vice President Mr. Frank Kelley, a retired USMC Brigadier General, an avid reader, and inspiring life-long learner himself.
With over 1000 log-ins to the event, there was active participation in the conversation, contributions of favorite books, and great questions posed via chat. Many were inspired to contact their library and reserve the books they heard about on the episode, and at least two created a list of all books, podcasts and other resources shared during this episode.

To view the two list of books crowdsourced by participants and speakers during the session open the recording and look for the attachments. (Please note that while these lists reflect the spirit and suggestions of both the participants and the speakers, they are not formally endorsed by DAU or the DoD).
As always, we are inspired by your passion to learn, time to attend, and great ideas you bring forth, and we continue to curate DAU webcasts and new episodes. We are also revamping our webcast page
www.dau.edu/p/dau-webcasts to make it more user friendly for you!
