The Benefits of Using Transfer Credit to Further Your Education
Transfer credit is a way for students to apply credits from one educational institution to another. If transfer credits are approved, it may save a student time and money by allowing them to receive recognition for previously completed coursework. Applying for transfer credit may help a student further their education without having to start over.
Recently, American Military University (AMU) revised its
Transfer Credit Center to assist students seeking to continue their education by converting credits earned from previous academic courses, military service, or professional training and certification to academic credit at AMU.
Advantages of Transfer Credit
At AMU, 84% of new undergraduate students were able to transfer credit from an accredited institution or from their professional experience. Those transfer credits may accelerate the pursuit of a degree or certificate and may help save money on educational costs.
AMU’s transfer credit program is especially well-designed for current and former servicemembers who have accumulated some college credit during their military assignments, but not enough to complete a degree. However, they could be closer to meeting their educational goals if they have had:
- ALEKS, AP, CLEP, DSST or Excelsior examinations
- Public service experience
- Professional experience in a given field
- International degrees
- Any number of other measurable sources of college-level learning
In addition, a policy under “Associate Degree General Education Fulfillment” opens another educational opportunity. This policy allows prospective students with an associate degree from a regionally accredited institution recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) to leverage that degree to fulfill up to 30 credits of the general education requirements of a bachelor’s degree at AMU. Credit may vary based on specific program requirements.
Which of Your Transfer Credits May Apply?
To make it easier to evaluate which of your transfer credits may apply, AMU offers the
Transfer Equivalency Database (we call it TED for short). This site helps potential students have a general idea of how their previous academic courses may count as transfer credits towards an AMU degree.
If you have any questions about transfer credits, please contact the university’s admissions representatives at
[email protected] or visit the
Transfer Credit Center for more information. AMU staff are available to help you to take advantage of what you’ve learned and get you back to your educational goals.
