Section 508 Overview
Welcome to the home page for 508 compliance training for DAU.edu. This training is intended to help DAU faculty and staff create 508 compliant documents and assets for both internal and external use.
What is 508?
First and foremost, it's the law - Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act (29 U.S.C. 794d), as amended by the Workforce Investment Act of 1998 (P.L. 105-220), August 7, 1998. Section 508 requires that individuals with disabilities can access and use information and data that is comparable to those without disabilities, unless an undue burden would be imposed on us.
Does it apply to me?
Section 508 applies to all federal departments and agencies. When we develop, procure or maintain documents or assets that are available electronically (e.g. websites, MS Office documents, PDF documents, or videos), they are required to be accessible to people with disabilities—both other federal employees and members of the public. This applies to not only resources that we make available to our students but also our own internal documents for our colleagues who may have a disability.
What is accessibility?
Accessibility means making something usable by everyone. For example, a document is accessible if people with disabilities may rely on assistive technologies. Creating an accessible document allows these users to access the same information and data and perform the same functions as other users.
Is it difficult to create accessible documents?
Actually, it's not. In fact, it is just as easy to create an accessible document as it is to create an inaccessible one and sometimes easier! By making the most of Microsoft Office's built in capabilities, you can easily avoid the most common issues related to accessibility. You will find links to quick written and visual tutorials on how to create the most common types of documents and resources that DAU staff and faculty create. When it comes to Microsoft Office applications, many of the steps are the same in ALL the applications. Learn once and apply four times!
