Overview
Condition Based Maintenance Plus (CBM+) is the proactive maintenance strategy developed within the Department of Defense to achieve cost-effective weapon system life-cycle sustainment. DoD Instruction 4151.22 defines CBM+ as "...a collaborative DoD readiness initiative focused on the development and implementation of data analysis and sustainment technology capabilities to improve weapon system availability and achieve optimum costs across the enterprise. CBM+ is the application and integration of processes, technologies, and knowledge-based capabilities to improve the reliability and maintenance effectiveness of DoD systems and components. At its core, CBM+ is maintenance performed based on evidence of need. CBM+ is built upon Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) and condition-based maintenance to enhance safety, increase maintenance efficiency, improve availability, and ensure environmental integrity. CBM+ diminishes life-cycle costs by reducing unscheduled maintenance and enabling predictive maintenance. CBM+ turns rich data into information about component, weapon system, and fleet conditions to more accurately forecast maintenance requirements and future weapon system readiness to drive process cost efficiencies and enterprise activity outcomes”.
In conjunction with DoD Instruction 4151.22 Condition-Based Maintenance Plus for Materiel Maintenance this updated August 2024 versionof the DoD CBM+ Guidebook represents the most significant update to this guidebook since 2008. For additional information on this important topic, see also:

This document is part of an Integrated Product Support Guidebook Suite and serves as an important resource for defense acquisition workforce members to use in crafting and successfully executing life cycle product support and sustainment strategies.
Note: Since this video was originally created, there have been changes to statute, DoD policy, and guidance. 10 U.S.C. 2337 was renumbered as 10 U.S.C. 4324 and the term "major weapon system" replaced by "covered system." However, 10 U.S.C. 4325 (formerly 2337a), which addresses ILAs, still uses the term "major weapon system." The policy contained with DoDI 5000.02 Enclosure 6 now resides in DoDI 5000.91. The Defense Acquisition Guidebook (DAG) was superseded by a number of functionally-aligned guidebooks, including an updated Product Support Manager (PSM) Guidebook.
