The Department of Defense Experimentation Guidebook is issued by the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering's Prototypes and Experiments office.
Military Departments and Defense Agencies have long used experimentation to support innovation and develop solutions to vexing military problems. Many of these organizations and their subject matter experts (SME) have developed processes, methods, and tools that help them succeed in their efforts. The Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering (OUSD(R&E), Prototypes and Experiments (P&E), was tasked to capture and consolidate these approaches, best practices, and recommendations into a single reference document for the Department of Defense (DoD). This guidebook is designed to complement DoD, Military Service, and Defense Agency policy pertaining to experimentation, providing the reader with discretionary best practices that should be tailored to the circumstances of each experiment. It is a living document and will be updated periodically to ensure that direction captured from governing documents is current and that best practices are fresh.
