Last Updated: 06/24/2024

The June 2024 DoD Product Support Business Case Analysis (BCA) Guidebook was published by the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Product Support, DASD(PS), to assist Program Managers (PMs) and Product Support Managers (PSMs) in executing the Product Support BCA process to develop executable and defensible recommendations for a system’s product support strategy.

A Product Support BCA is a structured methodology and document that aids decision making by identifying and comparing alternatives and examining the mission and business impacts (both financial and non-financial), risks, and sensitivities. The result is a data-driven recommendation on the best-value product support (sustainment) alternative.

The updated guidebook is a substantial revision to the prior 2014 version and includes fact of life updates and new content on the Adaptive Acquisition Framework pathways, Regional Sustainment Framework, Product Support BCA process steps, and Product Support BCA revalidation. For a full list of changes, refer to the guidebook’s front matter.

This document is part of an Integrated Product Support Guidebook Suite and serves as an important resource for defense acquisition workforce members to use in crafting and successfully executing life cycle product support and sustainment strategies.

NOTE REGARDING THE VIDEO: Since the original video was produced, there have been several changes to statute, policy, and guidance. 10 USC 2337 was renumbered 10 USC 4324. The product support policy contained in DoDI 5000.02 Enclosure 6 now resides in DoDI 5000.91. The Defense Acquisition Guidebook (DAG) was rescinded and its contents incorporated into other guidebooks; product support content was incorporated into the Product Support Manager (PSM) Guidebook.
